What the Registry is
The City of Calgary Secondary Suite Registry is a public list of every address that has an approved, inspected secondary suite. When a suite is issued a final Building Permit sign-off, the address is added to the Registry — usually within a few weeks.
How to search it
- Visit calgary.ca/pda/pd/permits-and-licenses/secondary-suites/secondary-suites-registry.
- Search by street address, community or MLS® area.
- If the address appears, the suite is legal. If it doesn't appear, it isn't — regardless of what any listing says.
We cross-reference the Registry
Every Calgary listing on this site is checked against the Registry when we classify a suite as "legal." A registry hit is the strongest signal we can find without a permit search.
What a Registry listing proves
- A Development Permit was granted for the use.
- A Building Permit was closed with a passed final inspection.
- The suite met code as of the inspection date.
What it doesn't cover
- Ongoing maintenance — a suite can fall out of compliance after inspection (blocked egress, disabled alarms).
- Illegal work done after the fact.
- Backyard / garage suites built after 2018 sometimes appear separately — verify with a permit search if in doubt.
